Field Training - Overview

FCS 5920 Field Training is an opportunity for students to earn credit while gaining invaluable hands-on experiences in the workplace. By registering for this course, students in the Department of Family and Consumer Studies are able to apply what they learn in a classroom to real-life situations and worksites. Students may register for 1 to 4 credits each semester for up to two semesters (maximum of 8 credits). For each credit hour, students are required to work 45 hours (av. 3 hours per week) over the course of the semester. Grading is done on a credit/no credit basis only. CCS students who choose 5920 to fulfill their capstone requirement must register for at least 3 credit hours.

Requirements

In order to receive credit for this course, students are required to complete all of the following:

  1. Attend two (2) meetings with the Field Training Coordinator (date and time assigned)
  2. Create four (4) goals for their internship and have them approved by their agency supervisor
  3. Write weekly journal entries on assigned topics
  4. Track their time spent at their field training site
  5. Receive two (2) evaluations from their agency supervisor

Prerequisites

Eligibility for Field Training is based on the criteria:

  1. Major declared in Consumer and Community Studies or Human Development and Family Studies
  2. Successful completion of 10 (semester) credit in the FCS Department
  3. Major grade point average of 3.0 or higher
  4. Must be mature and respectful

Field Training Options

Examples of Field Training options include:

For CCS majors: Department of Consumer Protection, AAA Fair Credit Foundation, Catholic Community Services, Habitat for Humanity, Hinckley Institute of Politics, The Children's Justice Center

For HDFS majors: The Children's Center, The Children's Justice Center, The Christmas Box House, Centro de la Familia de Utah, Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), SLCAP Head Start, Guadalupe Schools
