adolescents; preventing multiple problem behaviors among youth
Dr. Smith is a prevention scientist early in her career with a keen interest in understanding and ultimately preventing problem behaviors among adolescents, with particular attention focused on girls.
She is the Principal Investigator on two research projects related to female juvenile offenders. The first project is a qualitatively driven, grounded theory approach to understanding unique risk factors associated with female offending, to identify the specific pathways of offending for girls and to synthesize participant-generated themes about prevention for girls at-risk for involvement with the juvenile justice system. A secondary goal of this research is to begin to evaluate gender-specific services to identify strengths and weaknesses of the current system for female juvenile offenders. The one-hour semi-structured interviews were conducted with 30 female juvenile offenders, aged 14-19.
The second project, funded by the Utah Board of Juvenile Justice, is aimed at developing a risk assessment instrument for female juvenile offenders with the specific intent to guide treatment planning and placement in an effective and cost-efficient manner, resulting in decreased recidivism. |
