       Dr. Mayer conducts research on consumer movements and consumer policy. His work on consumer movements focuses on the history, goals, tactics, and accomplishments of the movements both in the U.S. and in other countries. Dr. Mayer's policy evaluation research has covered topics related to consumer safety and warning labels, marketing claims and consumer information systems, deregulation in the airline and telecommunications industries, and public participation in government rule making. He is currently conducting research on consumer protection and privacy issues in electronic commerce and on the implications of genetic testing for consumers of life insurance.

     Dr. Mayer is an active member of the American Council on Consumer Interests , for which he serves as the delegate to Consumers International . He is currently on the editorial boards of the Journal of Consumer Affairs, Journal of Consumer Policy, and Journal of Public Policy & Marketing. He served as associate editor of the Encyclopedia of the Consumer Movement (ABC-CLIO, 1997). He has served on the board of directors of the Direct Selling Education Foundation and the Consumer Federation of America Foundation. Currently he is on the board of directors of the National Consumers League, the oldest consumer organization in the U.S., and the Consumers Union WebWatch Project. Dr. Mayer also participates in research projects of Consumers International, the confederation of the world consmer movement.
